Hello, I’m Yamil,

Thanks for popping in! I was born in Boston but raised in Puerto Rico where I earned my BA degree in Commercial Advertising. During that time I enjoyed playing competitive Chess, and became a state champion. In Chess, much like UX, you try to understand your opponent’s behavior, what their next move is, and why. Advanced players can even predict future moves or the flow of the game. Solving UX design problems to me is like a good game of Chess. I am passionate about implementing solutions to solve user problem. I believe that understanding the underlying phycology that govern how humans interact with technology is key to understanding users needs.

Although my interest in design started with a desire to make things look good, I quickly went deeper into the process.  I realized that understanding the user experience and using that knowledge to solve problems was equally compelling and satisfying.  I like to take a holistic approach, using design thinking to understand user needs and allow that data to drive my design.

Today, I’m a Product Designer currently working for the US Department of Defense in the Aerospace division. I started on this path after coming across the Section 31 organization, an aerospace effort within the DoD to establish internal, homegrown software development teams. The organization’s mission to “create a digital space force where extraordinary software propels space dominance” was something I immediately connected with. This vision is what inspired me to continue Product Design as a career, and it is what continues to drive me everyday.

I’m always open to hear about exciting opportunities within the tech industry.
